Elsa, a tiny stray, was rescued in snowy Houston in 2021. Shortly after she was spayed, the vet called with devastating news. During the surgery, multiple black cysts all over her reproductive organs were noted. We were told that little Elsa was filled with cancer and had a life expectancy of 1 to 2 years. Shortly after, Elsa developed seizures. We were battling seizures, a thyroid imbalance, and a weight gain from the meds. With every breakthrough seizure, we feared the cancer had progressed. We were preparing to give her the best life in her remaining time. Now, in 2024, Elsa has been in our care for almost 4 years. On Thanksgiving Elsa became very sick, unable to hold even water down. A trip to the ER revealed a darkened mass in the stomach/gallbladder area. Given her medical history, we were presented with two choices, treat the immediate symptoms and wait and see, or euthanasia. We chose to wait and see. Thankfully, Elsa bounced back! Now, we needed to see what we were dealing with in the stomach/gallbladder area. On a follow-up with her regular vet, an ultrasound was performed and we got surprisingly good news. No cancer was seen! Instead, Elsa had a gallbladder full of sludge and an inflamed liver. Elsa is one of those special cases where without funds on hand, we might not have this better prognosis. Thanks to our amazing donors, Elsa has a new lease on life and may get what she’s always wanted – a forever home. ~ Rebecca, foster mom
