Dover came into our care in August as a neglected and forgotten backyard dog. Starved for both affection and care, he was a sad shadow of the dog he was meant to be. Covered in fleas and ticks, his sad eyes tugged at our hearts. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that this boy was at death’s door. Initial blood work found that he was severely anemic with dangerously low RBC, alb, and platelet counts and wildly elevated liver enzymes. He was dull and shocky. Thanks to our generous donors, Dover was able to get the lifesaving care he needed, including plasma and blood transfusions as well as treatment for intestinal parasites. Four months later, although his appearance and energy both looked great, his blood work hadn’t shown much improvement, and he was diagnosed with a heart murmur at a follow-up appointment. Thankfully, at his most recent vet visit, Dover tested negative for Chagas and his ultrasound showed promising news – no major heart defects and no medication needed!! In the meantime, Dover is busy enjoying a pampered indoor life in his loving foster home! Playful and affectionate, he loves cuddling, belly rubs, and making new friends. He is proof of the resilience of rescued dogs and the life-changing impact of our community’s support. ~ Mallory, foster mom
